d-count without the oxidation step

What goes wrong

Counts d electrons from the neutral atom, skipping the oxidation state — or assumes ligand strength.

Next time

Calculate the central metal's oxidation state first, subtract that charge from the neutral valence electrons to get the true dnd^n count, and only then evaluate the spectrochemical series and geometry for pairing.
